Mead: Not Just for Immortals

“The years have passed like swift draughts of sweet mead in lofty halls beyond the West.” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

I probably had a relative understanding of what mead was long before I knew of the existence of wine or beer. Not that I as imbibing in it myself, but it seems like in every fantastical book I read and every country and time period those works transported me to, whether it be ancient Rome, Middle-earth, or anywhere and anytime in between, people (or elves or dwarves for that matter) were drinking mead.

It wasn’t until recently that I actually tried mead for the first time. It was certainly different, but in a naturally sweet and refreshing kind of way, and it led me to wonder how mead has continued to stick around for, well, ever. I found that the innovative and creative craft industry here in Colorado and specifically in Boulder is a definite factor.

Check out my article with Your Boulder titled “Redstone Meadery: From Lore to Local,” to learn about a local Boulder meadery looking to spread the word about why mead isn’t just for mythical heroes. You can read the post here.
